What is Connections?

Connections is a word association puzzle game by The New York Times. Players are presented with 16 seemingly unrelated words and must sort them into 4 groups of 4. Each group shares a common theme. Since its launch in June 2023, the game has become popular for its unique mechanics and entertainment value.

How to Play Connections?

Basic Setup

  • 16 words appear on the game screen
  • You need to sort them into 4 groups
  • Each group must contain exactly 4 words

Game Objective

  • Find the common connection between words in each group
  • Could be similar meanings, related concepts, or categories
  • Example: all fruits, all sports, etc.

Color Levels

  • Yellow group is easiest, connections usually obvious
  • Green group is slightly harder
  • Blue group requires careful thinking
  • Purple group is hardest, often involves wordplay

Game Rules

  • Select 4 words you think are related
  • Submit to check if correct
  • Maximum 4 wrong attempts allowed
